If a person is anxious or shy with people does it mean they have social anxiety? Everyone experiences nerves and anxiousness once in a while; attending a social gathering, getting interviewed for a job, or giving a work presentation. Social anxiety sufferers find social experiences tremendously fearful. Being humiliated and embarrassed is their biggest fear. In most cases they will try and avoid any situation that requires them to do something in front others.
When they have no choice but to confront a social experience they feel overwhelmed and have thoughts of making a clown of themselves. They end up sabotaging themselves with negative self talk only increasing anxiety. They become a complete nervous wreck and unable to relax.
They are likely to experience physical anxiety symptoms such as difficulty breathing, trembling, chest pains and a pounding heart. Sufferers will often replay the experience in their head over and over afterwards. These experiences can be devastating for a sufferer’s confidence and make them want to avoid further experiences.
Social anxiety can be treated however with a number of different methods and therapies. Although medication should not be relied upon as a cure it does have its uses. The root cause of anxiety can not be treated with medication. The usual prescribed medications are antidepressants, beta blockers and benzodiazepines which can be addictive.
Make sure that you are aware of the side effects and potential dangers of medication. Seek the advice of a qualified doctor before you decide on taking medication. Medication has its dangers which put some people off. There are other alternatives to consider.
Many people have reduced and even eliminated anxiety symptoms with the use of therapies like CBT. Slow deep breathing and relaxation can help you release pent up stress and physical tension. Built up tension an stress can feel too much to bear. Give yourself a break by learning to relax properly. Relaxation exercises can help you calm and help you see things in a different light.
Playing some relaxing music can help you get into a relaxed state. Focus on slow and deep breaths ensuring that you relax your muscles. A slow stretch is a great way to loosen up and get you ready.
